Heritage Associations rally to support La Perouse Market Gardens

The CHAA convened the conference to seek support for retention of the Heritage-listed Chinese Market Gardens at La Perouse. A number of media, Chinese and mainstream were present including Elizabeth Farrelly, from the Sydney Morning Herald. Ms Lowe Kelley was interviewed by the ABC. In addition to community representatives, others present included Hon Henry Tsang MLC, Councillor Ted Seng from Randwick City Council, Mr Graham Quint Conservation Director National Trust of Australia (NSW) and Mr Charles Abela, Chairman of the La Perouse Precinct Committee. The latter three all stated that they would be lodging submissions to support the retention of the heritage-listed Chinese Market Gardens, while the Hon Henry Tsang said he would be pleased to take a submission from the Chinese community and present this as a petition to the Minister for Lands, the Hon Tony Kelly, and to the Parliament of NSW.
Further support from the president of the Australian Heritage Institute [AHI] Inc.- an Australia-wide group of local heritage societies,Andrew Woodhouse:
“The NSW state government plans to overturn its own heritage listing and destroy the heritage-listed Chinese Market Gardens, Bunnerong Road, Randwick, to provide more grave plots for a local cemetery,” Andrew Woodhouse, president of the AHI said today.
Mr Woodhouse is calling on the Premier, Morris Iemma to overturn the proposal.
